WASCO has developed three climate data visualization tools in-house to meet different needs requested by our stakeholders. Two are continually updated and the third is a historical climatology (1973-2000) that will be updated in the near future.
The PNW Temperature, Precipitation, and Snowpack Trend Analysis tool was first developed by WASCO in 2007 to understand historical weather changes, giving context for future climate change. Information on historical trends is frequently requested from us, and this user-friendly interface allows these visualizations to be accessible to all users. The tool was redesigned using the Tableau interface in 2018.
The Mountain Snow Depth plotting tool was first developed in 2007 as a way to visualize the bi-monthly snow depth data provided by partners of the Northwest Avalanche Center (NWAC). This was redesigned in 2020 using the Tableau interface.
The WA State Cloud Cover tool was developed in 2006 as an easier way to explore historical cloud cover climatology around the state. Cloud cover data are provided in hourly format from NOAA NCEI, making historical datasets very large and hard to access by the public. This particular tool is outdated (only going through 2000) but is something we intend to update in the near future.
