This month represents the 30th anniversary of the hottest month on record for WA state – July 1985 – in the last 100 years. In recognition of the relatively warm temperatures that have prevailed in this neck of the woods during the last couple of years or so as well as the record warm June 2015 temperatures, it seems appropriate to review the weather of July 1985.

WA 2012 Water Year Summary

A water year in the Pacific Northwest begins on October 1 and ends on September 30, and is labeled by the year it ends in. According to the American Meteorological Society’s Glossary of Meteorology, “It commences with the start of the season of soil moisture recharge, includes the season of maximum runoff […] and concludes with the completion of the season of maximum evapotranspiration”.

NOAA’s New Climate Normals

The standard climate normal, or the 30-year average of weather conditions, is changing. Most anomalies and comparisons to normal conditions have been discussed using the average conditions between 1971 and 2000, but NOAA’s National Climatic Data Center (NCDC) has unveiled the “new normals” on July 1.
